Liberal votes at 16 motion carried

At the Liverpool City Council meeting on 3rd September, the Liberal Party motion endorsing the votes at 16 camapign was carried without opposition. Whilst the Labour Group abstained, rather than make their mind up, the majority of Lib Dems voted for the Liberal Party Resolution. Moving the resolution Liberal Party Councillor Steve Radford argued that vast numbers of young people were interested in politics as evidenced by the numbers at Stop the War demonstrations. He also said if it was good enough for 16 and 17 year olds to pay tax and serve in the armed forces it was good enough for them to vote. The Liberal Party submission supporting the Votes at 16 Campaign can be found on the Liberal Party website Newsdesk and more information can be obtained from the votes at 16 website. The Liberal Party is very keen to encourage the participation of young people and has the youngest city councillor in Liverpool, Chris Lenton being elected in May 2003 at the age of 23. Chris Lenton is a graduate of Liverpool Univeristy having studied politics and represents the Tuebrook Ward along with Cllrs Steve Radford and Hazel Williams

Steve Radford making a real impact...

Liberal Party Chair Cllr Steve Radford was in Bath, speaking alongside John Redwood and Neil Herron (Metric Martyr).

Steve’s contribution elicited a remarkable tribute from Democracy Movement organiser Andrew Edwards:-

I met Liverpool Councillor, Steve Radford for the first time yesterday. He had travelled all the way from Liverpool to Bath, Somerset where he spoke at a cross party rally that was demanding the people of Britain be given a referendum on the EU Constitution. Tony Blair says that he will make this decision! We, the people, must tell him otherwise!

Well, all I can say is that Liverpool is very lucky to have a Councillor of the calibre of Steve Radford. He gave a speech on Saturday, which held his audience riveted, as he outlined his vision of a Europe of real diversities & democracies! Forceful & Dynamic, he brought a whole new dimension to the afternoon, as well as to the wider debate. He made everyone realise that it is the European Union that is unwanted. Not >Europe! The two are not the same thing!

I urge all of you in Liverpool to note this name, because, Steve Radford, >is determined, to once more, make the Liberal Party a force to be reckoned with in British Politics. His first target will undoubtedly be the so called Liberal Democratic Party, of which he is scathing. I happen to agree with him. They are generally neither liberal nor democratic! But his ideas
will undoubtedly appeal to many right across the current political spectrum! Watch this space as they say....!

Lib/Dems be afraid. Be very afraid! Oh yes, and for the record, I'm not a member of the Liberal Party. Just someone who was very impressed with the >Liberal message given out by Cllr Radford!

Boost for Liberals in Wyre Forest!

Liberals in Wyre Forest (centered on the North Worcestershire carpet manafacturing town of Kidderminster) received a boost today as they are joined by resigning Liberal Democrat Constituency Chairman Mike Price.

Mike had told the Lib-Dem Executive that they were going nowhere in Wyre Forest - let down by Regional and National Parties.

New Liberal Constituency Chairman Louise Taylor was reported to be delighted at this turn of events.

Liberal Wyre Forest DC Group Leader Fran Oborski, who has known Mike Price over many years, was equally delighted.

It is expected that Mike's new role in the Wyre Forest Constituency Liberal Party will become clearer after September 10th's meeting of the local Party Executive.

Liberal Democrats hold two District Council seats in Wyre Forest.

Liberals hold seven District Council seats and two County Council Seats in Wyre Forest.

The whole story is on the Wyre Forest Liberal News Site.
